Zvulun Regional Council is responsible for 16 communities of various sizes and types, including villages and agricultural communities, in the Haifa district of Israel. The council approached TRIPLE-T to establish a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with primary, secondary and tertiary treatment for high-quality effluent. It chose TRIPLE-T’s proprietary TAYA technology due to its ability to handle the wastewater locally, with no need for sludge haulage. The treatment plant provides the local communities with water for irrigation. It also enables the council to achieve wastewater autonomy, cost savings and genuine peace of mind.
Zvulun Regional Council wanted to reduce its costs so it decided to change its approach to wastewater treatment. It aimed to provide local villages with sufficient clean water for irrigation, without the costs of transporting the wastewater to the major WWTP in Haifa and then purchasing the clean effluent back from that same central plant.
The wastewater treatment process comprises a 6mm screen, anaerobic treatment in an earth basin, and an aerobic-anoxic treatment based on TAYA’s technology, followed by sand filtration and chlorination.
After the 6mm screens, the influent enters the settling pond where COD, BOD and TSS reduction as well as flow equalization take place. The wastewater then flows into TAYA aerobic-anoxic basins, which handle the remaining organic material and provide the conditions for that nitrification and denitrification that is needed for Total Nitrogen (TN) reduction. The unique design enables the aerobic-anoxic treatment to take place in one reactor, reducing labor and OPEX. This unique, well-proven method based on passive aeration reduces the energy needed to operate the plant.
In the final stage, tertiary treatment involving a sand filter and chlorination takes place, achieving BOD and TSS of <10 mg/l. The clean effluent then flows out for irrigation. The entire process is monitored online and is fully automated and controlled for high-quality effluent.
Based on TRIPLE-T’s proprietary, game-changing TAYA technology, we designed a unique configuration of our TAYA ECO solution that combines passive aeration extensive elements with intensive biochemical processes. The robust and flexible local solution provides the council, farmers and residents with an optimal solution for converting regional wastewater to high-quality effluent, creating hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of clean water for irrigation per year. It is all achieved with minimal labor, near-zero sludge, no noise or stench, reduced eco-footprint and massive wastewater reuse. Importantly, the safe and efficient wastewater treatment meets regulatory requirements while enabling unlimited agricultural irrigation.
With TAYA ECO, Zvulun Regional Council, which comprises Jewish and Arab communities living side by side, gains continuous peace of mind, worry-free wastewater autonomy and significant savings.
