Overview

The park at the Ramon Airforce base in the heart of the Negev desert in Israel is irrigated with effluent from the wastewater treatment plant, based on the proprietary, game-changing TAYA technology. The project was established in collaboration with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and the Israeli Airforce (IAF). The plant was completed within 10 months and has been operational for the last 8 years, serving as a model for a decentralized, cost-effective wastewater treatment solution, while achieving very high effluent quality – resulting in enhanced quality of life for the Israeli soldiers on the base.

The NEED

The effluent discharged from the Ramon Air Force Base needed to be treated to a tertiary level with disinfection, for unlimited irrigation purposes. Once treated, the effluent would be recycled back to the base, and used to irrigate the JNF’s ‘Essence of Life’ Park. The green park, in the middle of the desert, was established by the JNF and Ramon air force base for the soldiers’ welfare and recreation. Triple-T was chosen to handle the project.

The Process

Triple-T designed, executed and operated this exciting wastewater treatment plant for park irrigation as a turnkey solution. It was the first project of its kind to be conducted at an air force base in Israel.

The extensive low-energy process included primary screening of the wastewater. Following this, the wastewater entered two sequential settling ponds, for initial sludge settlement and anaerobic treatment. The wastewater was then transferred into the Triple-T proprietary TAYA system where the majority of the containments were removed according to the required standards and regulations of the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The Result

The Ramon project achieved 2 major accomplishments: The first – taking the raw effluent and treating it at park irrigation level, created water autonomy and savings. The second – Triple-T was also one of the few companies in Israel granted public gardening irrigation approval by the Ministry of Health (MoH) as a clear vote of confidence in the company, its technology and high-quality water treatment.

The plant produces 1.44 million cubic meters of high-quality potable water and supplies it to the park, even in emergency cases. By reducing the plant footprint and lowering OPEX costs, this has led to huge savings for the IAF and the Government of Israel.
